At Cascade Children’s Therapy, we have been using kinesio taping to treat a wide variety of conditions (see our Physical & Occupational section, under services, for more information on kinesiotaping). Most of our occupational / physical therapy staff have attended courses in Portland on kinesiotaping in pediatrics. We want to update you on some of our success. One has been in using kinesiotaping to treat constipation in young children with musculoskeletal problems. Many of the children we see have poor abdominal muscle tone. We have used a facilitory taping technique for the oblique abdominals and the transverse abdominal muscles which has proven to be helpful in decrease or completely eliminating constipation in a number of our clients. We have seen two clients be able to get completely off medication that they previously needed for a successful bowel program. This has been very exciting to see. It is fast, easy for parents to comply with, and has immediate results. We have found that there is some carry over of the taping so the child does not need to wear the tape constantly but can use it intermittently and still see positive results.
Another taping which we have found to be quite successful has been in taping the elbow for those children with flexion tightness or contractures due to increased tone in the arm. We have used an inhibitory taping technique to the biceps which inhibits the flexion at the elbow, allowing the child to more fully extend the elbow. This positioning helps to reduce the overall tone in the arm, and allows for more wrist and hand movement as well as better weight bearing through the shoulder on an extended arm.
We are learning more and more about how kinesio tape can be a helpful and effective treatment modality for many of the children we treat. We are dedicated to bringing the most current therapy techniques and modalities to Cascade Children’s Therapy to enhance the dynamic and eclectic approach to helping the children and families we serve.
